FUN GUITARIST PROFILE: MARK KNOPFLER!

___
Mark Knopfler's sound with his band's debut album "Dire Straights" (and the single "Sultans of Swing") admittedly caught on very slowly with me. His distinctive Dylan-esque voice and admittedly tasteful guitar playing on a Fender Stratocaster was also influenced by J.J. Cale. Born in England in 1949, Knoffler's band followed up with "Communique", "Making Movies" (with the hits 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love'), then the LP "Love Over Gold" and the Live "Alchemy" was followed by a few more albums before the group ceased. Knopfler wrote 'Private Dancer' (a hit for Tina Turner's Lp of the same name in 1984). Mark moved from his Strat to a Pensa-Suhr guitar and plucks his strings to create his unique sound. A current CD that I brought along on my trip is his fine effort with the always amazing Emmylou Harris (a tour de force in progressive country) called "All the Roadrunning". It's worth a listen for this imaginative artist combination. They have a "Live" CD out and hopefully we can catch them in concert. Quite enjoyable!

Hi!! Long time for me. Been quite busy lately. Mark is an excellent guitarist. Private Investigations: The Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopflere ,is an awesome album. He is one of the best finger style guitarists of the modern era.He has performed with many great artists. Dylan, Clapton,Steely Dan, the late Chet Atkins to name a few.In addition, he has scored the music to several films, including Local Hero, The Princess Bride, Cal, Last Exit to Brooklyn and Wag the Dog......ok, enough for now. Hope you had a good valentines day. Take care.

Mark Knopfler has a very special place in Danish poetry, as his name is the only thing that rhymes with the word "kartofler" (the danish word for potatoes).

I'm a big fan of Emmylou Harris although "All the Roadrunning" although is not her best effort, it still have a top position in my music collection.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to give my Dad a head's up on the Mark Knopfler album. He loves guitar. He has a Fender Stratocaster himself :)

Renae: Clapton AND Chet? I did not know that :-) When I was a tot, I snuck a copy of my brother's LP "Chet Atkins Workshop" and was mesmerized by it. While in Vegas I saw that Eric Clapton was planning on coming to the MGM Grand March 10th. I must see this guy! He recently said on TV that he had been listening to a solo he played in 1996, and realized he couldn't do that today. Of course, I think he's phenomenal! And so are YOU! lol!
