TAMING THE DRAGON!

Bruce Lee

"I think the high state of martial art, in application, must have no absolute form. And, to tackle pattern A with pattern B may not be absolutely correct."
_____
Some time ago, those of you who have been on this ("Ahem!...") unique journey of mine may have recalled a story where I played a role in helping a girl being attacked and kidnapped in broad daylight in a shopping center parking lot. Quick action and the Police nabbed the perpetrators. While a rather long stretch, I feel completely justified in using this rather extreme example (and Bruce Lee's quotation above) in describing how and why I remained in my pajamas yesterday from the moment the Fed Ex delivery man rang my doorbell in the morning (and I took delivery of my new laptop computer), to "Taming the Dragon"--with new bells and whistles through my work out in the early evening. Whoa! Let's "talk trash" for a moment here.
_____

I have been noticing cautious comments on many of your Blogsites about "Vista" by Bill Gates. Yesterday, not coincidentally, was the first time I swore in 2008--and perhaps no one could understand the reason I did so better than CNN's Lou Dobbs! How many times have you called for "technical support" on a product and wound up talking to someone in another country? This is ridiculous! We are cannibalizing our manufacturing in this country to "outsourcing" with record numbers of unemployed. To add insult to injury, I was asked to register with MSN. I'm going on record to tell you MSN and AOL are lousy. They unload so much garbage onto customers' computers that is simply unnecessary. So far, I've eluded them. And for seven hours I was --to use a great man's movie title, "Taming the Dragon". In conclusion, I'm perfectly happy with my Honda CRV and could care less about owning a Lamborghini (even though I love cars). Just keep it simple. Oh, by the way...as a follow-up: No, I haven't taken karate lessons yet. But I was disciplined enough not to attack my new laptop computer. In summary, I'd characterize yesterday as a "rough first date" with the latest software from Mr. Gates. We'll have to eventually come to a truce. Any similar "Vista" stories out there? Do tell!

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND WITH A SMILE :D))!

I don't have any Vista experience - my little system is happily chugging away on XP - but I'm with you re. AO-HelL - what a disaster they are.

As for outsourcing - I have been hit hard by it. I am a small little company whose clients over the years have been bought up by larger and larger cos that send their work off-shore to cos they own under a million different names.

I am happy to report that in the past few weeks many clients are telling me the tide is turning - the offshore work is so late and so bad that they're coming back to their dedicated vendors.

Cross your fingers for me and all the other small guys out there.

Computers are in a way like cars. When they work they are great when they don't work - or they or the software have been up-dated.

They can be very frustrating. I am not to fond of automatic updates.

Thanks for a great post Michael.

I agree w/ AOLHELL! I live in the middle of no where. Our phone co. is privately owned and I have dial up. AOL is the fastest thing we have :( it sucks...more than I can say.

Good luck w/ your new laptop. I hope you get acquainted without much trouble ;)

We had to special order a Dell laptop with XP for my wife so she could interface with the accounting firm's server. We've decided that the next personal computer we get will be a Mac.

I'm with Dianne, happily pootling along on XP on my laptop :-)
I am a traditionalist.....[snigger]

I see no reason to invest in a new system.

Of course, if someone bought it for me, I wouldn't throw it out of the window....

The biggest problem with Vista is that they purposely made it where old software would not work on it. My gradebook is the most important software that won't work, but next year the district is starting a new gradebook system, and the only inconvenience is that I can't enter grades at home, which is actually not a bad thing -- I hate working at home.
The other major problem I've encountered with Vista is that it uses so much RAM, and naturally when I chose my laptop I thought 1+ gig of RAM would be plenty only to find that you need 2 gig or more.

I just had one of my friends tell me what I needed. After having the laptop replaced 3 times, I finally have one that seems to work and do what I need it to do.

My desktop is is XP and I am satisfied with it for now, but I realize that all the accessories and most browsers will soon move on to Vista-only products and programs. I want a new computer and/or laptop when I can afford them but I hate the thought of dealing with Vista. It was bad enough moving from Win. 98 to XP. So far I have only heard of ONE person who really likes Vista and hasn't had any problems with it. Oy!

Hope your weekend is a good one, Michael. ;o)

Love and hugs,

Diane

Diane: Love and (((HUGS))) to you as well! Yeah, I was comfy with XP, then Vista shows up out of nowhere. It's like "Who rearranged my furniture?" But I will grasp it all eventually! Have a nice weekend!
