FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT PRESENTS: "TENDER MERCIES"!

Yeah, I liked the Italian movie poster better, so I used it!
___
Back when there still was a Texas Film Commission, I hosted their Annual Awards Night for three years in a row, and while it was great fun meeting so many wonderful actors and actresses such as Shirley McClaine, Chuck Norris, Sheree J. Wilson and others, I was pleased to have met Tess Harper (who appears in our movie selection for tomorrow night). Unfortunately, I never met the multi-talented Robert DuVall. From his roles as a cab driver in Steve McQueen's "Bullitt", to "The Godfather" trilogy as a mob lawyer, to a criminal in Clint Eastwood's "Joe Kidd", a beat cop with Sean Penn in "Colors", the original motion picture M*A*S*H as kooky "Frank Burns", to "Lonesome Dove", I predict that this highly versatile actor will one day receive a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Film Institute--that's my prediction. Why pick this film? Well, for one thing it is low-key.
______
While I am (for once) safely tucked away in the majestic "Valley" of Phoenix, Arizona where it was 66 degrees to my hometown of Cincinnati's 19 degrees (with ice storms predicted), I am very aware of just how many of you have braved the Winter with colds, the flu and worse. So, this film is perfect to light the fireplace, and (go ahead and laugh, I can't hear you) pour some Bailey's Irish Cream straight up into a coffee mug to sip on with a movie that is easy to love. Director Bruce Beresford adapted Horton Foote's story of an former country singer-turned alcoholic named Mac Sledge whose fame rivaled today's popularity of George Straight. His days of fighting for fame are behind him, and his life appears to have stalled at a dead-end. But fate lends a hand when he makes friends with a young widow (Tess Harper) and her son (Allan Hubbard). His life also takes an upward turn when he finds the strength to give up drinking and he eventually meets his long-estranged daughter (a brief but very memorable performance given by Ellen Barkin). After a lot of anguish, he summons up the courage to pick up the guitar again, and he discovers that his songwriting ability is still intact! I won't give away the whole movie when I smile and mention a favorite scene of mine: when a young up-and-coming country band manages to locate Sledge in a small Texas town for advice and mentoring. Duvall's understated mannerisms reveal the fear of his once soaring past that these young guys have unintentionally tapped into. Here are two worlds: the world of musical fame from the past, and the present-day perspectives Duvall's character comes to experience off stage. Overall, this is a story of Hope and of newfound happiness, through dire circumstances and gratitude for the blessings of "tender mercies" that each of us hopefully experiences.
_____
Tess Harper in some regards became over-associated with her role in this movie that seemed to dog her at seemingly every Hollywood occasion. "And here's Tess Harper from 'Tender Mercies' ". I don't remember how long she endured that. But she is a fine actress along with Betty Buckley (here as Duvall's first wife) who also has a beautiful and strong singing voice. I tend to forget that she was in the original ensemble of "Cats" where she sand "Memory". A caution: you do NOT have to be a fan of country music to appreciate some wonderful songs here, none of which made their way to Country radio when this film debuted way back in 1983. But it's nicely done and simple.
____

The Cast:
Robert Duvall is Mac Sledge; Tess Harper is Rosa Lee; Betty Buckley is Dixie; Wilford Brimley is Harry; Ellen Barkin is Sue Anne and Allan Hubbard is Sonny. 1984 ACADEMY AWARDS WIN: to Robert Duvall as Best Actor in a Leading Role and Horton Foote for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. You will love this one!

Enjoy, and I'll see all of you after
The NPF Gala!

I think Robert Duvall is an excellent actor, and I've never seen him in a role I didn't like. For some reason, he reminds me of my grandpa (who passed away 22 years ago)

I too will watch anything with Duvall in it.

Tess Harper has always been so under-appreciated.

Looks like this one might be another one for my NetFlix list!

Hey Michael, I came over to wish you all the best at the Gala. Too bad it wasn't in a couple of weeks. I'm going to visit Dad. I could have come out and taken pictures for you!

Break a leg, my friend!

There's a scene with Duvall and Barkin where she asks if he remembers the song he always sang to her about a dove. He says he doesn't and when she leaves he starts singing Wings of a Dove. It brings a tear to my eye every time I see it.

Sheree J. Wilson is just cute as a BUG!

Robert Duvall stayed here in Darlington when he filmed "Days Of Thunder". I didn't get to "meet" him but I saw him and everything I heard about him was good. I pink puffy heart the Godfather. My favorite movie (along with Gone With The Wind) of all time!

I have not seen this one. Thanks for the review!

Have fun at the Gala :)

I haven't seen this either. I'm impressed by your fantastic presentations in the past. And I send you very best wishes for your gala.

I was with the CEO of a leading bioscience company in Cambridge, UK today which is trying to produce better diagnostic treatment and medicine for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, let's hope it happens in the near future.

I love the blues in the poster. Wearing blue means "I'm available".
I want to see that movie, it sounds awesome.

ALL: As you can only imagine, we are on an intense schedule here with last-minute preparations in Ft. Lauderdale, but I felt at the very least that I needed to acknowledge all of you who were so kind to respond to this blog post. I'd be delighted to get back with all of you next week when I am back in Arizona.

barngoddess: He is extremely versatile and after this film he would often show up in Fort Worth at Billy Bob's to two-step with his wife!

Seamus: I agree, he is refreshing in any role!

Martini: I'm sorry to learn of your Grandfather's passing. Mine was very special to me!

Dianne: And as Kathleen Turner said last week on "Larry King Live" the number of 40 or 50-something actresses such as Tess, or Sigourney Weaver and others are just amazing. We are foolish to not see them cast in many roles! I agree! :)

Last Girl: I giggled when my driver took me on I-95 and thought of YOU!!:D! "Stay off of I-95"! lol, my friend and thanks for good wishes. I too am sorry we missed. Please give your father a big hug from me!

Renae: I'm glad you like my Kooky humor. A lovely woman sitting at our Pre-Gala reception last night is from London and she said I must give her my card because her husband is also easily amused!:)

p m: That is as authentic a scene as you will ever see. I agree, well acted and emotional!:)

Ole Blue: Isn't he great. He's come such a long way with no doubt a lot of hard work!

flip-flop momma: And I know Robert Duvall would like YOU TOO! :D

Maria: Yeah, I liked that poster better. The English one was too bland. Why be bland when you can have color, right? Thanks my friend! :)

Patti: I cannot handle the darkness of "The Godfather" and the violence just leaves me too rattled. A group of us last night talked about "The Kite Runner". And the betrayal scene between the two friends was too much for me. I slept poorly.

Sheree and I Co-Hosted an event together and I LUVED her!!!(married). :)

Carolyn: Thank You. We are all working feverishly hard. "Film at 11".

Ellee: Controversial or not, as a caregiver to my father whose life was cut short by PD, we MUST have stem cell treatments and the latest trials are absolutely amazing. Certain members of the public are most misinformed. And Chrostopher Reeves succinctly summarized in just one paragraph how to carry this pioneering research out ethically and morally and with integrity. But if we could just get others to open their ears and hear the facts. Thanks for filling me in. I am not surprsed you were a CEO, you have a fun and energizing spirit! :)

jlee: Yes, he's great all the way around!

Seraphine: Really? I'll have to start wearing BLUE more often then! Enjoy the film!!!:)

I love Duvall's movies and haven't seen this--it'll go on my netflix list.

Now, on another matter, what happened to the Texas Flim Commission? Did George axe it?

At 2:14 AM, Blogger Michael Manning said...

Sage: No, they died off internally from a lack of funding and a change in management. It was entirely internal. Sad but true.

Duvall always was underrrated.

jean-luc-picard: A very good observation! Especially when one "Googles" his body of work which is vast!
