"FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT" PRESENTS: ARTHUR!
Good Evening! But no, not in the creepy sense that the late Alfred Hitchcock used to deliver that ostentatious greeting to us through the television. Rather, as in "I'm damn late with this post because life is what it is..._____
Having cleared that up, I've been receiving requests about featuring ARTHUR on "Friday Movie Suggestion Night" for some time. So, not only do I say "Sure, why the hell not?" But I must add that I am very proud to feature the above movie poster as a departure from the bath tub photo we all know. HA! Pretty swank, huh? I have a minor societal situation to bring up since this movie deals with a forced decision the main character must make as a single guy. Girls: "Are you influenced by money in a man?" I ask this because it just seems (as a general observation) that the Maxim magazine looking woman in my part of town appear to have their compass' set for emotionally abusive guys and a leased exotic sports car. Now then, onto Naturally Attractive and Down to Earth Girls who have us at "Hello": "Just out of curiosity, what is it with this fad of dating guys who look as if they have watched one too many news reels of NASA's 1960's Mercury space program?" Now, I am no prude nor a "stick in the mud" by any means. But trying to make sense of the dating choices I see "from the outside looking in" throughout my travels makes about as much sense to me as Kevin Federline announcing that he is lending his name to a new line of condoms! Do tell. All of which takes us to our movie of the week with Dudley Moore in ARTHUR! Oh, by the way...Can you believe Bud Cort was considered for this role? Scary kids. Scary...
_____
Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore) is an alcoholic who is hysterically funny and an heir to a $750 million dollar fortune. He has no resume for reasons that are soon obvious, but he does have two servants, Hobson and Bitterman! Bach's father finally throws down the gauntlet: either Arthur marries boring and idiotic Susan Johnson (Jill Eikenberry--yes, yes of "L.A. Law", but that was later), or he'll be cut off and put out on the street! For the very first time in his storied life, he falls in love with a short-order waitress named Linda (Liza Minnelli). Now then, as I've alluded to above (in an admittedly jaundiced fashion), the question is: will Arthur choose the money or the girl?
___
The film is so much about Moore's maniacal and uncontrollable laugh, his demands, embarrassing himself in public and the exceptional chemistry we see between he and Liza Minelli. Mention must be made of Sir John Gielgud, who is equal to Sir Lawrence Olivier (in this authors opinion and others) as among the greatest Shakespearean actors of his generation. This is drunken laughing, knock down-drag out slapstick comedy and I must say, a great escape from ANY bar scene or observation on "the human condition" and the singles scene; it is a charming Joy! Writer and Director Steve Gordon tragically died young in his early 40's after this film wrapped. Sir John Gielgud WON an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for this film in 1982. The Oscar for Best Music, Original Song went to Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, Christopher Cross and Peter Allen for the song "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" performed by Christopher Cross. The Cast: Dudley Moore is Arthur Bach; Liza Minnelli is Linda Marolla; Sir John Gielgud is Hobson; Geraldine Fitzgerald is the tough Grandmother, Martha Bach; Jill Eikenberry is Susan Johnson; Stephen Elliott is Susan's father Burt Johnson; Ted Ross is Bitterman; Barney Martin is Linda's father Ralph Marolla; Thomas Barbour is Arthur's father Stanford Bach; and I must add that Anne De Salvo is Gloria the hooker! :D The film was Produced by Robert Greenhut and Charles H. Joffe.___

In answer: Guys with jobs are generally sexier than guys without jobs. It's not a superficial observation.
Seraphine: Yes, I get that. And BTW I started working at 14 and have never stopped. My point centered on the weird choices and appalling lack of depth as an observation that scores of men and women have shared with me. Matters of the heart and other substantive considerations was what I was highlighting. But I agree, all should have a job in a perfect world. I am fortunate to have mine. lol!:)
I have never saw this movie either.
I love the theme song from it though, um, I think Christopher Cross sang it?!
I definitely am not influenced by money. I could have married a very much moneyed (psycho) guy instead of my beloved Stacy.
Morning, Patti: You'd love this. It is endless laughter from Dudley. BTW: Glad you married Stacy!!! He seems cool!!!
Have a nice day, Patti!!!! lol!
Fantastic movie choice. A great movie. Dudley Moore at his best.
This is one of my guilty pleasure movies-- Liza and Dudley= fantastic!
p m: Well, it's a bit odd really. I mean following "10". But many readers wanted it.
fleur de lisa: I completely agree and found her very sweet in this role. I haven't seen much of her lately.
The only rapper i care for is the one spitting I mean rapping at my windshield as he is washing it.
When I was kid people who studdered tried to hide it. It todays world its a fad.
Hmmm, I think my friend would have made one hell of a rapper HA HA HA.
I have seen Arthur many times and its on my rake of movies. I just broke 1000 movies. Hmmm thinking of what they cost broke is the right word.
The best movies are the ones that stress life and this one does it from all angles.
As for what each of us want, to each his preference.
I never had money and never really cared for more than I needed and the women that have shared my life didn't care for it.
When money and love get together, all you get is the change.
AMEN, WALKER! Yes, I should explain here that I softened the blow of what might have appeared to be my "snarly" observations earlier to spare vacuous men and women alike whom I opined upon "as a general observation"--to quote Dudley Moore from "10". Specifically, the scene with Max Showalter, the Priest whom Moore visits under the guise of discovering the whereabouts of Bo Derek's character, "Jennifer", whom the Priest recently married. Thank You Walker! :D)
Neat movie Michael - Thanks for the suggestion. And as in the movie "I would take the money too".
I hope you have a great weekend.

Glenn: I second that! :)
Hi... going to toss a little controversy into all this peace and good will. I hated this movie. I know Michael Moore was talented but I was always made uncomfortable by him. Maybe it's the empath in me; something about him seemed so sad to me even when he was being funny. This is probably a great movie, I just didn't like it much despite a good cast and all its other virtues.
Raven: Michael Moore is "Roger & Me" and "Farenheit 9/11". This is Dudley, dear! I did like "10" better. lol!
Ach! Brain fart. Dudley is who I meant. I'm kind of fond of Michael Moore despite his crass ways. Dudley always made me feel very sad. I felt like pain bled out of his every pore.
Raven: Well, he truly loved making these two films I have featured and in the final stages of his disease PSP, he said haltingly, "I'm just glad that we got "10" and "Arthur" made before this happened to me". God Bless him. I miss his talent so much! By the way, if you like good jazz, he and Cleo Laine recorded :Shinin Through with Dudley at the piano!
