PROTECTION FOR ABANDONED PETS FROM HOME FORECLOSURES!

These two photos say it all. I hope this BLOG leads at least one person to adopt an abandoned pet from a "Foreclosed" home here in the USA. If it does, please share!
Sarah McLachlan is so attractive and cool. Apologies to the guys in Blogland, but I hate to disappoint you; this BLOG POST is about another topic (but Sarah shares the same concern!).

While debates will continue about the damage of adjustable mortgages and the enthusiastic, albeit, over-reaching people who were (in many cases) cheated by unscrupulous Realtors, the ASPCA reports that "..families who have lost their homes and find themselves no longer able to keep their pets continue to pour in from around the United States. In New Haven, CT, where foreclosures have gone up 80 percent in the past year, local animal shelters receive an average of a call per day from someone who wants to surrender a pet. In Michigan, the Anti-Cruelty Society shelter has seen a 30-percent intake increase over the same period. And last week, the City of Los Angeles, CA, issued a press release revealing that LA Animal Service’s intake of pets rose 16 percent in the first four months of 2008.

"California—arguably one the of states hit hardest by the sub-prime mortgage market collapse—is leading the way in the creation of new legislation that attempts to address this issue. The California State Legislature is now considering Assembly Bill 2949, which would allow bank representatives to immediately seek potentially life-saving help for animals abandoned at foreclosed properties. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier, and is cosponsored by the ASPCA and the California Animal Association.

“The ASPCA urges pet parents faced with foreclosure to bring their pets to a proper animal shelter if unable to place them with friends or family,” says Californian Jill Buckley, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Services. “With the increasing numbers of property abandonment's, more and more animals are being left behind to fend for themselves. This bill will help these animals obtain the proper care and attention they need.”

ALL: Assembly Bill 2949 will move to the Senate for consideration. Please visit The ASPCA Press Room to read more about it! I've already adopted 2 cats and a bird, but if my landlord would allow it and I could afford to keep them I'd have a house full of animals. I want to take in every one I see but it's just not possible.

I hadn't heard about this issue until now, Michael. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Hope you're having a great Memorial Day weekend! ;o)

Love and hugs,

Diane

Another light shined on another important topic Michael. Thank You. I hope everyone takes the time to check out the legislation in their area - I'm going to in mine.

After the heartbreak of Katrina my area adopted new standards for accepting pets into emergency shelters and I signed up as a 'safe house' for people who would need to leave their animals somewhere if they had to leave their homes - a town near me is a flood zone.

There are so many little things we can all do to help those who can't help themselves.

Hugs Michael.

I don't understand why they can't keep their pets.
I think it's just a big BS excuse.
My cat, used to be two cats didn;t cost me more than 20 bucks a month for food.
When I had two dogs and tow cats that cost me about forty a month plus anothe 200 a year for shot for the bunch so its not the money.

I think its alot of bunk and people should be held accountable for their actions and there is no way that all the animals can be taken care of.
He where i live they have passed a law forbidding people to own more that twwo pets in the city so what happens to the over flow of animals that can't be adopted?

I think those who abandon their pets because they lost their houses are irrisponsable and don't deserve pets or children for that matter.

Walker: For some reason, I detect that you feel strongly about this?

Seriously, I can't speak to other people's individual circumstances. Many naive first-time home owners were induced by fast-talking Realtors who knew that they were loading up impressionable people with outrageous debt that was unsupportable. They didn't care about anything other than their commission checks. Many feel that the Realtors should be in jail. On the other hand, many former unscrupulous Realtors according to National Public Radio are now coaching their victims having chosen to become honest people.

Evidently, Donald Trump's solution for victims to arrange a "work-out" solution with the banks claiming that "They don't want those houses back" is falling on deaf ears. The banks flat out refuse to renegotiate (cutting ones nose off to spite their face?). So, there's enough blame in my opinion, to be spread all around. If a homeowner is employed and stuck with one of these terrible financial contracts, a stabilization board ought to be established just as the ATSB was after 9/11 to save the airline industry. This action would allow a refinanced loan with fixed interest rates. The banks could recover their investments by structuring the loans perhaps longer and the homeowners could retain their property and gradually build equity after the market recovers. This way, bankruptcies could be avoided. New legislation established to prevent sub-prime loans should also be enacted. This would encourage stronger banking principles and encourage consumers to knock off ignorant behavior by signing loans that are mathematically impossible should a market shift occur.

Good post, Michael. There's so much to be done in terms of animal welfare. It's good that we are becoming increasingly conscious and active. I'd love to see state-sponsored mandatory spay neuter programs. Where I live right now, I only see three strays, but the area where I lived before had so many - there were twenty or thirty that I saw regularly just around the house I lived in. But I ramble. Sorry.

I hope this nation survives Bush. The past 7 years have left almost no aspect of life undamaged in some way.... except for the very rich, I guess and even they have probably not gone totally unscathed.

I have been a longtime ASPCA supporter i'm proud to say.

My elderly neighbor is losing her home to foreclosure and we might be taking her Doxie. I'm a sucker, I know *sigh*

Raven: Yes, I too am a huge supporter of what Bob Barker used to say when on TV at the close of his show, "The Price Is Right": "Remember to spay or neuter your pet". I'm helping a guy right now with graphic art designs for Lost Cat photos. He and his wife have a once feral Cat named "Kittie" who went missing. I produced some posters for him to put up around his street and told him we'll go to direct mailers if he has no luck. I too ramble, Raven! lol! :)

Morning, Patti: You are NOT a sucker. You always have such a big heart for people and animals. YOU ROCK, PATTI! lol!
